'The Blind Side' Bests 'New Moon' At The Box Office

Edward and Bella's supernatural romance is no match for Sandra Bullock's underdog story this weekend.

Box-Office Top Five
#1 "The Blind Side" ($20.4 million)
#2 "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($15.7 million)
#3 "Brothers" ($9.7 million)
#4 "A Christmas Carol" ($7.5 million)
#5 "Old Dogs" ($6.9 million)

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" has enjoyed record-smashing success since its opening three weeks ago, but even the staunchest Robert Pattinson supporters couldn't realistically expect that the film would reign supreme over the box office forever. Still, nobody could have predicted that it would be "The Blind Side," Warner Bros.' unassuming football-centric family drama starring Sandra Bullock, that would ultimately topple the wildly popular vampire franchise.

With an estimated budget of $29 million, "The Blind Side" has earned a walloping $129.3 million since opening three weeks ago opposite the second "Twilight" installment. And while "New Moon" has held the top seat for the majority of that time, Bullock and her compatriots were finally able to push past the supernatural romance flick's fanbase this weekend with a $20.4 million first-place finish.

Despite losing to "The Blind Side," the forces behind the "Twilight" franchise have no need to hang their heads. As of this weekend, "New Moon" has earned $255.6 million domestically and almost $500 million worldwide with at least two more sequels in the works. Clearly, Summit Entertainment has plenty of good fortune to look forward to.

"Brothers," the new war drama starring Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman, took third place at the box office with $9.7 million. Even with its high-profile cast, the film's depressing subject matter might have hindered its performance at this point during the holiday season.
